How to Replace a Saab 93 Key Fob

Every car should have a key fob equipped with the ability to lock and unlock your car. The batteries inside these devices could be faulty.

If you are looking at purchasing a Saab 93 and don't have two keys, you could add one for about $400. This is done by purchasing a new TWICE module from a dealer and installing it with a hand-held computer, called a Tech2.

Replacement Keys

Many used Saabs only come with one key. It is a good idea as soon as possible, to buy a spare one. This will be cheaper than replacing the entire vehicle should you lose it. It is also crucial to rotate your keys regularly to prevent all the wear and tear and also to keep them clean.

If you have lost your only key, you'll need to replace the CIM (Column Integration Module) or TWICE (Theft Warning Integrated Central Electronics) module and a new one and special programming to convince the car you're not trying to steal it. These modules can cost upwards of $400 to replace and are only available via mail purchase. Most locksmiths or dealers cannot do the job on the same day.

The good news is that most modern Saab automobiles can be equipped with a second key added to the system without replacing the original computer in the vehicle. The dealer will use a handheld computer called Tech-2 to program the second key into the vehicle. There are garages that can do this as well but the procedure is more complicated and they will require reprogramming the EEPROM in your car's computer to accept the new key.

Replacement key fobs for keys

Saab owners who have lost their last key or had it stolen need a new replacement as soon as possible. The steps required to obtain a working 9-3 Saab fob require the service department of the dealer and can cost hundreds, including an additional key and TWICE device, which is a central electronic theft warning.

The process is less expensive if you have a spare. The new key should be compatible with the original TWICE module and a pre-owned one is unlikely to work in this application, but an authentic OEM replacement can usually be purchased from a dealer for a fraction of the cost.

Making the case for a new SAAB key fob is fairly easy. You can make use of a flathead screwdriver to open the case, but be careful not to damage the electronic components inside. After you have removed the batteries and electronics you can then replace the case with the shell from the old key fob. Make sure that you align the two pieces and then gently press them in place and allow them to click into their place. Replacement Remotes

The cabin of the Saab 9-3 has been designed with the driver in mind, and offers logical layouts as well with a tactile feel. The dashboard wraps around the driver and includes a fun turbo vacuum gauge that gives a unique touch to its instrumentation. A leather-wrapped steering column has audio, cruise control, and phone controls.

The console that sits between the seats has one cupholder, and the knobs for the Bose audio and dual-zone climate controls are placed according to logic. The touch-screen display could be distracting while driving.

The 9-3 is a great performer in terms power. Its low-pressure turbo model takes about 8 seconds to reach 60mph, while the more potent Viggen can reach 60 mph in 6.9 seconds.

One of the keys to the Turbo X's popularity is its outstanding handling. Despite its heavy nose and 60/40 front-to-rear weight distribution, the Turbo X feels agile and well-balanced on two-lane highways.

The only downside to this car's amazing performance is its poor fuel efficiency. It's rated at around 27 mpg city and 35 mpg in highway driving with the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine. The Turbo X special edition with more power will be available in 2008 only. This model features a unique rear seat that folds flat to increase cargo space. It also comes with a distinctive rear spoiler, and a more aggressive bumper.
